Newgrange
Dec 2007Dad took myself and Jacqui to visit Newgrange, one of Ireland’s most famous prehistoric sites. Built around 3200BC, it’s over 500 years older than the Pyramids, and is constructed so that the first rays of the sun on the morning of the winter solstice illuminate the central tomb.
The facade collapsed at some stage, so the nature of the mound remained undiscovered for thousands of years, until 1699. It was finally excavated in the late 60s, and the facade was refurbished shortly afterwards.
